Syunik marz is one of the most beautiful regions in Armenia, offering a variety of majestic sceneries and picturesque towns and villages. The region is also known as the southern gate of Armenia, surrounded by the mountain-chain of Zangezour, Meghri and the Syunik highland. The highest point of the marz is the peak of Mets Ishkhanasar (h. 3552 m), while the lowest point (400m) is located in the valley of the Arax river. The high-water rivers Meghri, Voghdji, and Vorotan flow across the region. Overall, the marz is mountainous, rich with caverns, alpine meadows, and high mountains chains.
The marz center is Kapan, situated at 750 meters above sea level. Goris one of the most beautiful towns in the country has a fine Armenian architectural style. Both Goris and Sisian make excellent choice for visitors wishing to break up their journey to Nagorno Karabagh or the far south of the country.
